eating phoenix.

This vacation kind of caught us off guard, so we have almost no plans at all. Until now. I just want to point out a couple of things that are cheap and ungettable in our natural environment. This is a work in progress.

1) Mexican/Southwestern. I kind of hate revisiting a semi-exotic locale and then eating at the same old places, but I really do love the food at Dick's/Richardson's/Rokerij and Mara hasn't been there in forever. We also need some real tacos from somewhere, still searching for a solution that's closer than El Nopalito. More research necessary, this is Prioirty Numero Uno.

2) SouthernLolo's Chicken and Waffles sounds like exactly the thing I would want to have after 24 hours of bussing/training/flying/driving, accompanied by a mint julep and followed by a large "marijuana cigarette", after which I would sleep for a day and a half. Sadly, none of that is going to happen: more likely a salad and a glass of red wine.

3) Vietnamese/Korean. This is something Phoenix has a good bit of and Amsterdam has almost none of (especially Vietnamese). Recs to come soon.

4) "Nice" Restaurants. I'm kind of not really into this concept at the moment, and last year's visit to Zinc Bistro was pretty disappointing, but everything about Noca looks good. Except the location, really far away.

5) Shit that's close by. This is the 2nd most important category. Sushi Ken springs to mind: super cheap and good Japanese food, a concept unheard of in Amsterdam. Though sushi is not really what I would eat here.

My Phoenix friends swear by Los Dos Molinos for Mexican.
