After some further Chowhounding and Yelping, we scrapped our original targets and went to
Carolina's near the airport today. I thought it was a solid Good, but that rating really only applies to what I ordered, or I guess everything we ordered with flour tortillas: some other things were almost Bad. Dad's tamales were really bland and a chicken taco I ordered was even blander, and thank goodness we ordered some burros.
The burros were worth the trip, featuring shredded beef called
machaca, lardy beans, and red or green chile sauce inside, perfectly light and chewy tortilla outside, topped off with a garlicky red salsa and scallions or cilantro. Truly great tortillas. But in the end, really, it was nothing close to El Nopalito in terms of what I was looking for. At least I can cross it off my list.
Considering the style of food and the fluorescent lighting inside, there was no way in hell these pictures were going to make the food look good, but here they are nonetheless. Below: waiting to order; salsa serving vessels and cutlery; Mara's green machaca mix burro; my red machaca mix burro + hot salsa and cilantro; Pitty's #12 combo: red enchiladas, beans, and rice; driving home, just to prove I can take a picture with pretty colors.

it´s quite hard to believe that you guys are in that landscape while over here, we are knee-deep in snow.
All the food looks great. Especially those wings with blue cheese...
it's equally hard to believe that you guys are knee-deep in snow and without public transportation...we'll make some buffalo wings for you when we return with our suitcases full of Frank's...
